Women living in the late 19th century to early 20th century had realized that the first step of gaining gender equality, was to gain influential political power which would spark the first wave of feminism. Political agendas of women included issues concerning sexual, reproductive and economic matters. This is where large audiences noticed the female gender to have the potential to contribute as much to society as men do.
Second Wave of Feminism(1960s - 1980s)
After the second world war had occurred, the second wave of feminism concentrated on issues regarding the workplace, sexuality, family however reproductive rights was still relevant to the feminist wave and had been a concern in both wave 1 and 2. Feminist women were portrayed as achieving their equality goals however they had failed to pass the ratification of the equal rights amendment which has still yet to be passed. Many women during the second wave were initially part of the black civil rights movement, anti Vietnam movement,Asian american civil rights movement and many more groups that were battling for gender equality. Women felt so strong about these civil issues that they wanted to strengthen their voices by first fighting for gender equality.
Third Wave of Feminism(1990s - Present)
Third Wave of Feminism(1990s - Present)
In modern day society, there are new different types of feminists, these include ego cultural feminists, the radicals, the liberal/reforms , eco feminists and many more. The main issues we face today are prefaced from the work done by women during other feminist waves. Gender inequality is still relevant within the third wave of feminism. We are still working to fix the problems in male and female pay and the reproductive rights of women. Due to the range of feminist issues today, it is much more difficult to put a label on feminists. Instead of violent protests that the WSPU suffragettes had participated in, feminist movements consist of peaceful rallies and protests as a way of affecting the government.
